Initiative for Policy Dialogue

Housed at Columbia University, the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) was founded by Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz in July 2000. IPD helps developing countries explore policy alternatives and encourages wider civic participation in economic policymaking.

The failure of economic policies to consistently help developing countries achieve sustainable, equitable growth has inspired widespread international concern, and at times, even protest.  Yet instead of exploring the full range of economic solutions, the international debate has often centered on a narrow range of options. IPD represents a positive response to these concerns.

IPD brings together a global network of almost 200 of the world’s top economists, political scientists, policymakers, and civil society representatives from the North and South covering a wide range of institutions, such as: Harvard, Princeton, and Cambridge Universities, the London School of Economics, the University of Stockholm, the Center for Economic and Financial Research in Moscow, University of Delhi, University of Malaysia, the Africa Economic Research Consortium, and ECLAC. The network explores alternatives and educates civil society through four main activities: task forces, country dialogues, journalism training, and research.
